Wikipedia Lopwell is a site of natural beauty situated at the normal tidal limit of the River Tavy, 3 miles from north Plymouth and 7 miles from Tavistock, Devon, England. Lopwell Dam is a Local Nature Reserve consisting of several different habitats including saltmarsh, freshwater marsh and ancient semi-natural woodland.

The Addicks and Barker Reservoirs protected Houston for more than 70 years, until Hurricane Harvey filled them and caused 25,000 homes and businesses on either side of their dams to flood.

Lopwell Dam - constructed in 1953 to boost Plymouth's water supplies - is a tranquil spot on the River Tavy. The surrounding area (a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Local Nature Reserve) is known today for its plentiful wildlife, attracted by a range of habitats: woodland, marshes - freshwater above the dam, saltwater below - and mudflats.

-The original dam was constructed in 1953 by Plymouth City Council to create an additional water supply for the city. -Now a peaceful spot, Lopwell was originally a busy river quay, serving nearby mines and farmland dating back to the 13th century. -Before the dam was built, a ferry used to run from one side of the estuary to the other!

Both sides of this river are in Devon with Lopwell Dam linking the Bere Peninsula to the 6,000 acre Maristow Estate, their land rises from the Tavy Estuary to around 600 feet above sea level making it the ideal terrain for game such as Pheasant, Partridge and Grouse to be reared, only to be shot later in the year..
